Understanding Desmoid Tumors: Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment
Desmoid tumors, also known as aggressive fibromatosis, are rare, noncancerous (benign) growths that develop from fibroblasts — the connective tissue cells responsible for healing and structural support in the body. Although they do not metastasize (spread to other organs), desmoid tumors can be locally aggressive, invading nearby muscles, nerves, and organs, leading to pain and functional impairment.
Because of their unpredictable behavior — sometimes growing rapidly, sometimes remaining stable for years — desmoid tumors require a careful, individualized treatment approach.
